The Big Build returned to The National Building Museum in Washington D.C. this past October with the help of sponsors, including 84 Lumber, the nation’s largest privately held building materials supplier. This free, hands-on community day invites visitors of all ages to channel their inner builder and discover what it’s like to wear a hard hat, hammer a nail or drill a hole.
“The Big Build is more than just fun; it’s an opportunity to inspire the next generation of builders, designers, and engineers,” says Amy Smiley, VP of Marketing & PR at 84 Lumber. “By meeting with professionals and learning about their careers, children can be exposed to new and important roles they might not have considered before.”
During the event, attendees visited dozens of different interactive stations presented by contractors, plumbers, electricians, ironworkers, carpenters and professionals in many other fields to explore and learn about their careers, skills and hobbies.
For those who have always dreamed of operating construction equipment, the outdoor Truck Petting Zoo was a must-visit. Here, children can climb inside real construction machinery, including a crane, and get a feel of what it’s like to operate these powerful tools. This hands-on experience is not only fun, but also provides insight into the machinery that plays a crucial role in construction projects.
